Pack Bike Survey 2006
Yes the first ever Pack Bike Survey was conducted in May to ascertain the items of choice amongst Pack Riders. The Results may surprise some. Obviously most Pack Riders said that their own equipment was superior to other makers wears and there may have been a bit of brand bashing, but as one rider can only label top and bottom then the results will generally always be fairly accurate.
An the results are:
The frame material of choice:
- Carbon 70%
- Aluminium 21%
- Titanium 9%
Interestingly, steel didn’t rate a mention.
Frames:
Frames were not rated by popularity but by the voter rating the quality of the frames. There could have been a number of other frames listed but who cares!

I was surprised by the numbers here. Perhaps the crowd voting with their dollars?

The wheels on the bus…
Familiarity beeds contempt? Who knows, but Mavic certainly have the numbers amongst The Pack. While the new ES model topped the charts at a tad under 34%, the new red wonders together with the poor mans editions totalled over 40%. Some of the smarter money was on the Zipp 303’s and I guess those looking for flat speed went with the 404.Tek fans may be disappointed by the fact that Bontrager failed to sway anyone!
Pedal to the metal…
No real surprises here with Shimano taking the majority share at 62%. A distant second at 20% was Time.
Brain Power…
Alas, no one nominated the old faithful Gardian! Other wise a closely fought battle with:
- Giro 34%
- Specialized 29%
- Met at 19%.
