2007 King of the Mountain...

Once we were Kings ...

The definative list. A few surprises too!

August KOM...

11 Riders braved the wind and cold including Mr and Mrs Cutter, but no Oscar to defend the Yellow Jersey, which has made the race for the Eddie very interesting.

Line Placings:

  1. Russell Hunt
  2. Pete Riseley
  3. Dave Prior
  4. Anthony Price

Russell Hunt took line honours in his second ride in the KOM and a 1 sec PB, the only one for the day, now qualified and looking to give Riseley a run for top Eddie points for the rest of the year.

Top Eddie points went to Pete Riseley with his second place and the fastest ride of the day (15:19).  Again taking both the spotted and green jersey’s for the month.

Dave Prior has proven that the bike does not maketh the man or conquer the mountain.  The new Kuota helping Dave to his slowest ride for the year, but still 3rd over the line. At least it looks good Dave.

Cutter has held off John Warrick by 1 second on the line, denying John of extra Eddie points he needed to overtake Evan at the top of the points classification.

Although Evan had a very mediocre ride with a 2:30 blow out the number of riders has meant that he has earned enough Eddie points to take the lead.

After 7 months the Yellow jersey has finally been removed from the grasp of Oscar.

Eddie Standings:

  • 151 – 6 rides - Evan Rolton
  • 151 – 7 rides - John Warrick
  • 149 – 6 rides – Oscar Skabar
  • 131 – 5 rides – Dave Prior
  • 108 – 5 rides – Steve Herron
  • 105 – 6 rides – Anthony Price

The results over the next few months will be very interesting. Pete Riseley already has 70 points after 2 rides, so look out.

Thanks again for time keeping Dan.

July KOM...

Procrastination reigned supreme on Sunday morning.

The drive to Café Oggi provided the opportunity to check out the competition for the day.

Heading past ACR just on 7.30 there were no riders to be seen, a few km on and there was a lone John Warrick heading down the road with a spotted jersey in his thoughts. Not too far ahead was another lone rider, Feags (not sure what goes on in Feags head).

The rest of the drive showed not signs of life. Where were the hard men of The Pack?

Pulling into Oggi and there is a little VW tucked away around the corner, sheltering from the wind, and the timekeepers Commodore out the front but nothing else in sight.

Procrastination begins…

  • Wayne, Oscar and I discuss the morning’s radar and the possibility of getting drowned on the mountain.
  • Feags and JW arrive,
  • 4 riders, does that constitute a quorum?
  • I am sure it has to be 5. What a shame we’ll have to have a coffee and head back to warm beds…
  • A lone rider appears at the lights on Burwood Hwy, turning into Lakeside Drive it becomes clear that it is Peter Riseley.
  • That’s 5, surely we need 8 for a quorum…
  • But wait, Riseley doesn’t even acknowledge the 5 standing in the car park, turns around before getting to the driveway, and rides back out onto Burwood Hwy back the way he came. We are perplexed????
  • Back to 4 riders, the decision has been made for us, almost.
  • Just as we are planning to call Jeff Smith and cancel his services for timekeeping another 3 riders appear on the horizon, no Pack tops to be seen but they seem to be heading our way. Liwa, Evan and a new rider Russell Hunt ride in.

Procrastination again, surely we need 8 for a quorum…

Decision made, the KOM will proceed.

As we roll out onto Burwood highway another rider comes over the hill, was it Riseley returning?

No, it was Sam Rix, we are up to 8 and the pace would be interesting and my chances of any decent Eddie points had been smashed. I think Oscar and John Warrick had similar thoughts as they looked at the riders now in the group. Although Sam admits that he was not in form and that 20 minutes might be a good time today (yeah right…).

As we roll through Bayswater there is a hum from the rear of the group. Riseley has returned.  What was that about?? He had forgotten the Green jersey and had to ride home to pick it up and then catch up. Surely that extra work has destroyed his chances for the day…

We get to The Basin, quickly check the starting times and get underway before we all freeze. Mostly single riders heading off to struggle up in their own time, but there was a nice little train of Liwa, Riseley and Hunt chasing from the rear, with Sam Rix last to go.

JW, Oscar and Evan link up for a while, until the train comes up from behind, Hunt had been dropped, but Liwa and Riseley pick up Evan on the false flat, leaving Oscar and JW behind and flying past the front markers. Pete Riseley smashes the train near the top of the hill, breaking away from Liwa and taking the Spotty for the day. Oscar breaks away from John Warrick and tries to make up some extra placings to increase his Eddie score, finally getting Feags before the line. Russell Hunt gets up in front of John Warrick and then there was me.

I have been past by everybody (again), but where was Sam Rix????? Had he a puncture, a mechanical problem? No! I’ll let you all have a look at the results…

Official placings:

  1. Peter Riseley
  2. Liwa
  3. Evan

Jerseys:

  • Polka Dot          Pete Riseley
  • Green               Pete Riseley
  • Yellow               Oscar

Pete Riseley did look comfortable riding back down the hill with 2 extra jerseys to keep him warm. Fastest ride for the day with a new PB of 15:12

Slowest ride of the day? I’ll leave that one up to Sam to explain???

Eddie Summary:

149                   6 rides              Oscar

132                   5 rides              Evan

127                   6 rides              John W

108                   5 rides              Steve H

The Eddie is alive and well with riders chasing the best points they could on Sunday. Oscar has one more full ride to count, but plenty of room to move with a couple of low placings to be replaced. Evan is on fire and still has 2 more full rides to count, so could provide some major competition to Oscar over the next couple of KOMs. The ever present John Warrick still has 1 full ride but plenty of potential to improve his position. Late starter but serious contender, Pete Riseley. With 3 rides and 3 podium positions he is now in the position to get 6 sets of full podium points to become an Eddie contender.

Special thanks to Wayne and Jeff for the timekeeping job this month.  It was cold and horrible and I am sure that they had better things to do.

As for the hard men…

  • Mick Day was up there doing his own thing with the apprentice (Dan).
  • Greg Mc appeared at the top of the hill after it was over.
  • There was a group that rode on.
  • Not sure if they had to wait at the top of every hill for Sam Rix though…

June KOM...

Some quick and unofficial results from yesterday's KOM ...
Results sheet is with Dave Rae and on its way back to Steve Herron. Thanks Dave for timekeeping.

Dave Pryor did an almost equal PB time (1 second blow out) to take his second crown.  Well done to Dave who is now heading off overseas to lard up living the good life.
Second place to Evan.  Lucky that the rules about new bikes seem seldom observed these days.  Lucky too that the no Pack top, no win rule seems to have mellowed along the way.  No Evan, the Pack top under the Rockit Barber Shop vest doesn't count. And making up the podium, the evergreen Greg McDonald in third place.

  • 15 riders participated.
  • Only one PB for the day (and fastest time for the day) by Peter Risely (15.25) who was one of four riders doing their second and qualifying rides.
  • Polka Dot - Dr Dave
  • Green - Peter Risely
  • Yellow - still Oscar
  • Oscar did a one and half minute blow out.  Good to see that even riding machines have off days.  But he still picked up some handy Eddie points and some valuable Best Pack Man votes by showing a human side rather than his usual clinical ruthfulness.
  • Liwa was the surprise packet of the day.  With a 16.03, the boy is back.

See ya
Shane

May KOM...

Packers,

Great turnout today, 26 riders taking part, including 5 new riders.

  • 5 PB’s recorded.
  • Steve Coker is now qualified but after a 1:12 PB today he has also landed himself a decent ping for his next start.
  • 2 unqualified riders with the first over the line, Steve Coker and Simons mate Peter (no last name, Simon?)
  • green spotted Mick Day actually participated in the KOM for the first time in 2 years and proved that the back markers can win. Fastest ride of the day (and of the year), with a 14:35, only 4 sec off his PB, and first qualified rider over the line as well. Green and spotty jerseys for Mick.

Following Mick were 3 riders recording PBs, with Dan and Evan recording their second PBs for the year and Lenny improving on his best by 58 sec.

No other rides of note apart from Patto and Rick who are obviously saving themselves for Europe, both having around 4:00 min blowouts.

Dan Keane and Steve Coker both copped pings for their efforts today.

yellow Although Oscar did a no show he has held onto the Yellow jersey for this month and although he still has a healthy lead his absence has made the Eddie contest more interesting.

  1. Oscar – 106
  2. Steve Herron – 89
  3. John Warrick – 85
  4. Evan – 76
  5. Mick Pearce – 74

Thanks to Andy and Adrian for timekeeping and the photos should be great Andy.

Timekeepers for next month:

Dave Rae with Patto assisting.

NEW STARTING LOCATION AND COFFEE VENUE

Since the service at Romanzo is so pathetic there will now be a new OFFICIAL starting point and coffee house.

CAFÉ OGGI

Located on the corner of Burwood Hwy and Lakeside Drive on the same side as Romanzo. (The set of lights that we normally ride back to turn to the other side of the highway)

10 of us moved up from Romanzo and received our coffees within 3 minutes of arriving.

Coffee is good, and apart from the lack of Sour Dough and putting butter on the toast, the guys were happy with the breakfast as well.

They normally open at 9.00 on Sundays so there will be no starting coffees for those that want them.

Plenty of parking, plenty of seats and tables outside, undercover.
